Fungal Nail Treatment
Get Back to Barefoot Comfort
Restore Clear, Healthy Nails with Advanced Anti-Fungal Solutions
Fungal toenails, also known as onychomycosis, are a common and persistent condition that affects millions of Americans — causing discoloration, thickening, brittleness, and often embarrassment or discomfort. At SoCal Foot and Ankle Doctors, we offer effective, physician-directed treatments to restore nail clarity and prevent recurrence.
Our offices in Santa Monica and the Cedars-Sinai Medical Towers offer access to both conventional and advanced therapies, including prescription antifungals, topical treatments, laser, and regenerative options.
What Does Fungal Nail Look Like?
Symptoms of fungal toenails include:
- Yellow, brown, or white discoloration
- Thickened or crumbling nail texture
- Foul odor or debris under the nail
- Separation of the nail from the nail bed
- Involvement of one or multiple toenails
- May occur alongside athlete’s foot

How Do You Get Fungal Nails?
Toenail fungus thrives in warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes, locker rooms, nail salons, or shared showers. Risk factors include:
- Repetitive trauma to the nail
- Tight shoes or poor foot hygiene
- Diabetes or immune compromise
- Walking barefoot in public places
- Nail salon contamination
- Prior athlete’s foot infection
Treatment Options for Toenail Fungus
???? Prescription Topical Solutions
We offer CN-U Nail Solution, an advanced topical anti-fungal available exclusively in-office, which penetrates the nail plate more effectively than over-the-counter products. Works well for early-stage or mild infections, nail thickening, and discoloration.
???? Oral Antifungal Medication
Terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole are systemic treatments for moderate to severe cases. Typically prescribed for 12 weeks. Requires lab testing to monitor liver function.
???? Laser Therapy (Optional Addition)
Laser treatment is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive way to reduce fungal load in the nail. Often used in conjunction with topical or oral medications for improved success.
???? Debridement (Nail Trimming & Thinning)
Performed in-office to reduce nail thickness and enhance treatment penetration.
???? Total Nail Removal (Severe Cases)
In resistant infections or painful nails, surgical removal may be offered — either temporary or permanent.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Toenails grow slowly — and full clearing may take 6 to 12 months even with treatment. The goal is to kill the fungus and allow healthy nail to regrow over time.
Consistent treatment + compliance = best results.
Preventing Fungal Reinfection
- Disinfect shoes with UV sterilizers or antifungal sprays
- Wear breathable, moisture-wicking socks
- Avoid walking barefoot in gyms or locker rooms
- Change socks daily and rotate shoes
- Treat athlete’s foot promptly
- Use CN-U Nail Solution preventatively after treatment
