Charcot Foot Management
Specialized Care for a Complex Diabetic Condition
Charcot foot is a serious and often overlooked complication of diabetes that can lead to foot deformity, instability, and even limb loss if not managed properly. At SoCal Foot and Ankle Doctors, with locations in Santa Monica and near Cedars-Sinai Medical Towers, we specialize in early detection, conservative management, and limb preservation techniques for patients with Charcot neuroarthropathy.
Prompt, expert care can prevent the progression of joint collapse and reduce the risk of ulcers, infections, and amputations.

What Is Charcot Foot?
Charcot foot (Charcot neuroarthropathy) is a degenerative condition that affects the bones, joints, and soft tissues of the foot or ankle in patients with significant peripheral neuropathy. Without protective sensation, patients unknowingly place repetitive trauma on the foot, leading to inflammation, fractures, dislocations, and severe deformity.
Key Risk Factors:
- Longstanding diabetes with peripheral neuropathy
- Prior foot trauma or surgery
- Loss of protective sensation
- Obesity or poor circulation
Symptoms of Charcot Foot:
- Swelling and redness in one foot
- Warmth to the touch (compared to the other foot)
- Little or no pain despite significant joint damage
- Sudden foot deformity (e.g., collapsed arch)
- Foot feels unstable or uneven
Our Approach to Charcot Foot Management
???? Early Diagnosis
We perform detailed exams and use digital X-rays and diagnostic ultrasound to detect subtle fractures or joint changes.
???? Immobilization & Offloading
Total contact casting or custom offloading boots are critical to prevent further collapse during the active phase.
???? Advanced Wound Care
If ulcers develop, we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy, growth factors, and bioengineered skin substitutes to promote healing.
???? Custom Bracing
Once inflammation subsides, we fit patients with custom Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walkers (CROW) or Richie Braces to support and stabilize the foot.
???? Surgical Intervention
In severe or unstable deformities, surgical reconstruction may be necessary to realign or fuse damaged joints.
Advanced Therapies Offered
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for wound healing
- Shockwave Therapy to promote tissue regeneration
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for joint recovery
- Stem Cell Injections to aid in soft tissue and bone repair
