 Raynaud’s Disease of the Foot

What Is Raynaud’s Disease?

Raynaud’s disease, also known as Raynaud’s phenomenon, is a vascular condition that causes episodes of reduced blood flow to the extremities, most commonly affecting the fingers and toes. When this happens in the feet, patients experience dramatic color changes, numbness, and cold sensations. At SoCal Foot and Ankle Doctors, with locations in Santa Monica and Cedars-Sinai Medical Towers, we offer comprehensive evaluation and management of Raynaud’s to improve comfort and circulation.

What Causes Raynaud’s?

Raynaud’s occurs when the small arteries in the toes constrict excessively in response to cold or stress, limiting blood supply. There are two main types:

  • Primary Raynaud’s: More common and not associated with other medical conditions
  • Secondary Raynaud’s: Associated with autoimmune disorders like lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis

Triggers include:

  • Cold weather or air conditioning
  • Emotional stress or anxiety
  • Smoking or caffeine
  • Certain medications (e.g., beta blockers, migraine meds)

Symptoms of Raynaud’s in the Feet

  • Toes turn white or blue, then red upon warming
  • Cold, numb, or tingling sensation
  • Burning or throbbing pain as circulation returns
  • Skin tightening or shiny appearance (in severe cases)
  • Delayed wound healing in toes or forefoot

Diagnosis

Evaluation includes:

  • Detailed history of symptoms and triggers
  • Clinical exam to observe color and temperature changes
  • Capillaroscopy or vascular testing, if needed
  • Blood tests to rule out autoimmune disease (in secondary cases)
